Face it. Old Man Winter is on it’s way.

Ice, snow and wind can have devastating consequences on our homes. Every winter there Calgarians experience loss due to burst pipes, frozen gutters and other weather-related disasters.

Gutters and roofs need maintenance. In the fall it’s best to remove seeds, leaves, sticks and other debris from gutters so melting snow and ice can flow freely. Also remember to check your roof insulation. Improper insulation and ventilation in your attic are often the cause of ice daming and gutter back-up causing leaks and icicles.

For minor gutter cleaning, a broom or blower may only be necessary. But cleaning out your gutters and brushing debris from your roof, though an important task, is not an easy one. Climbing, moving ladders and working several feet off the ground can be dangerous.

If you only clean your gutters once or twice a year, you may want to consider hiring a professional. Bristol Cleaning staff work safely and efficiently, with extensive training on climbing protection systems and devices.

If you would like a no obligation quote on gutter cleaning, please call Bristol Cleaning at (403) 244-7279. Don’t forget to ask about our fall clean up specials, including window cleaning, pressure washing or our Christmas light decorating service.

Clean Windows Improve Your View of the World

What do you imagine when you hear the term ‘window washer’? Perhaps you think of high swinging contraptions and balancing men with spray bottles and giant squeegees. Or maybe you think of that guy who scared the pants off you one morning at work. Recalling when you turned around to find him standing on the other side of the glass and you wound up with coffee down your front.

It’s more likely though that you’ve never really thought about it. How many people actually consider their windows much? We look through them to shop, wave to or spy on our neighbours, and occasionally to make sure the broccoli is out of our teeth.

But how often do you clean them?

I’m sure you clean the insides at least once a week to clear off your dog’s nose art or your child’s ever growing handprints.

But what about those windows at work? You love the view of passersby or the little birds you feed and while shooing away the neighbourhood cat. So it would be unfortunate for that view to be obstructed.

It doesn’t matter where you are you’ll always find windows or doors that present your house or business to the world.

Bristol Cleaning understands how important that view is to you. They are more than just buildings or pieces of land. You want the best for your home and business and we can help with all that upkeep. Be it landscaping, lawn work, or yes, window cleaning, Bristol Cleaning can do it all. We even help you set up your Christmas lights to keep your husband off the roof this winter. We’ll even make sure that once Christmas is over your lights come down before the snow melts.

So take a minute and think about your windows. Think about that garden you’ve been meaning to take care of. We can help.

How Do You Tell The Difference Between a Cowboy and a Window Cleaner?

cowboySearch “window cleaning” in the Yellow Pages and you’ll get four pages of Calgary window cleaning companies. With so many choices, how do you tell the difference between reputable window cleaners and the cowboys?

Start with asking these three questions before choosing a Calgary window cleaning company:

Do you have a Safety Program?
Bristol Cleaning has an extensive employee safety training program. All of our staff undergo a comprehensive safety training course and receive ongoing updates. We’ve been accident free since starting business in 2007.

Is your company licensed and insured?
Bristol cleaning has $5 million in liability insurance and are fully WCB covered to protect our employees as well as our clients. Some companies reduce their overhead by underinsuring or not carrying insurance at all. For this reason, be wary of considerably lower prices. It is completely within your rights to ask to see the Certificate of Insurance.

Do you belong to local or national trade associations?
Bristol Cleaning is a member of the International Window Cleaning Association, Alberta Construction Safety Association, as well as an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau.

Once you’re satisfied the window cleaning company is credible, don’t forget to ask about what’s included in the cost. Does the quote include inside and outside of the windows, french doors and sliding doors? Do they remove screens and clean the tracks?

With these tips in mind, you can avoid the cowboys and confidently hire a professional, reliable window cleaner.

Struggling to catch spring fever?

Clean Windows Let the Sunshine In!

5 Ways to Alleviate SAD Symptoms

Trees budding, tulips blooming, and birds chirping – all sure signs that spring is finally here.

What’s that? You’re just not feeling it?

Psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal, MD, author of Winter Blues, estimates 6 per cent of adults experience a debilitating depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a mood disorder in which people experience a serious mood change thought to be relatAed to seasonal variations in light. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and may also feel depressed. Another 16 per cent of the population experience milder “Winter Blues”.

Don’t be SAD and let the sunshine in!

Low-light conditions tell the body to produce melatonin, which makes you feel drowsy. People with mild SAD symptoms can benefit from making a few changes in their lives:

  1. Enjoy your lunch or coffee on a sunny step or park bench.
  2. Rearrange your furniture so that you frequently sit near a window.
  3. Keep your curtains open during the day.
  4. Get your trees pruned, clearing away branches that block sunlight.
  5. Get your windows cleaned, dramatically improving the light quality in your home.

If symptoms don’t improve, be sure to seek out some professional help. For more information, visit

Three Reasons You Should Hire A Professional Landscaper

Lawn maintenance is an essential and often time consuming part of home ownership. Here are three great reasons to hire a professional lawn care service:

  1. Curb Appeal: A professionally landscaped property can have a considerable impact on the overall valuation of your home. It’s recommended by real estate professionals to invest 10% of your home’s value in landscaping. First impressions, even from the outside, are critical. [Read more...]

How to choose the right snow removal company

Hi, my name is Damian Phillips. I operate a Snow Clearing company here in Calgary, Alberta. It can be tricky to choose a snow removal service, especially when there are so many to choose from in Calgary. Most seasonal trades (such as landscaping or window cleaning) will provide snow removal in winter to keep their trained staff employed and with the company.
It can be especially hard to choose when you are new to the service and do not know what to expect. Here are a few tips, pointers and questions to as to give you an idea if the company is reputable and can do the job properly and safely:

Snow removal

Will the company come out to clear when it is still snowing?

Some companies will wait to the end of a snowfall before they start their route. This can be days (or more!) from the start of a snowfall and allows snow and ice build-up. If it snows through the night and is still snowing, it is reasonable to expect the company to clear in the morning and return the next morning to clear the snow that fell after the first clear (one per 24 hr period is usually the max.)

Time work done & how soon after the snowfall?

What time will the company be at your property to clear it? This may vary as the time it starts and ends snowing will affect the time of the clearing. But on a standard day, when the snow happens throughout the night, what time will they clear by the next day. Usually the morning is standard, with heavy snowfalls this may push to early afternoon. You should at least expect it cleared when you return from work.

How soon after the fist snowfall will the service guarantee they will be at your property to clear it? Legally, the city walk must be cleared within 48 hours of the end of a snowfall, but good companies will ensure they are there long before this. This is especially useful with residential properties as people like a clear drive/property to come home to.

Where do they put the snow?

It is no good to clear the snow from the areas contracted, only to dump it where you don’t want it. i.e., they clear the driveway but dump it in the road in front of the drive. You also don’t want to move all the snow to your neighbor’s property. Sometimes there is limited space for where to put the snow. Try to be flexible and discuss this with the service provider.

Contract – for your peace of mind but do they tie you in?

It is always best to get a written contract (with terms and conditions, dates of coverage, areas of coverage etc.) This covers you, and if the worst happens, and somebody slips on your property, you have something to show you have made every effort to keep the property clear.

Most contracts will not only tie the service provider in to the full term but the client as well. If you want flexibility or haven’t worked with the company before, look for a contract that you can adjust or cancel at your request. This will give you a chance to test out the service without the risk of 4 to 5 months of payments for poor service.

Flexibility – from first snow

Nobody really knows when it is going to start snowing (least of all the weather man so it seems.) Whilst you will need to specify the dates you wish to be covered from/until, some companies offer the flexibility of beginning the contract form the ‘first snow’. This means that as soon as there is a snowfall that is deemed to be sufficient enough to need to be cleared, the service provider will be around to clear your property and commence your contract from then. This also means you never have to worry about clearing snow.

Residential Snow RemovalInsurance

The company you choose should have liability insurance specifically for residential or commercial snow removal. $2 000,000 is sufficient, some carry $5 000,000. This is important as any damage that can be caused to your property, other property, or persons by a service contracted by you will be covered by the insurance of the service provider and not your insurance or you personally.

The same goes for WCB. If a worker gets harmed on the job providing a service contracted by you, this will be covered under the company’s WCB insurance.

The company should be capable of clearing all areas of a property. What areas of the property will they cover; City Walks are a must, as these must be cleared by law within 48 hours of the end of a snowfall. You can also include driveways, paths, decks, patios, back walks, bin areas. The service should be able to provide clearing for all of these areas if requested.

How long have the company been providing snow removal services, and are their staff fully trained. Will they clear up to the edges every time (so there is no build up, or ‘creep’.)

What equipment does the company carry to use on a regular basis? Is it just shovels or do they have powered backpacks to clear the snow down to the concrete efficiently and safely. Do they have an Auger, or ‘Snow Thrower’ or ‘Snow Brush’ to clear the heavy snowfalls?

Some companies also have a truck mounted plow. This can be useful in parking lots or when there is snow buildup in front of drives or roadways.

Customer Service – Friendly, Reliable & Professional

As with all services, they should be provided in a friendly, professional and courteous manner. You are the boss and should be expected to be treated as such. The services offered should be explained to you and any questions you have should be answered gladly. You should be able to get a feel for the company by asking some of the questions above.

Good luck & Happy Wintering!
